Detailed description of Deland Country Club, CLOSED 2012

Deland Country Club, is a Private, 18 hole golf course located in Deland, Florida.

In 1925 the DeLand Hills Country Club was formed and a golf course was built on the site now occupied by the DeLand Country Club. The original Club continued to operate until the early 30's when, due presumably to the effects of the major depression current at that time, it closed.

However a few die-hard golfers continued to use the course until the middle 30's when, finally, the course was abandoned. The land laid idle until the present course was ressurected following the original 1925 Donald Ross design.

The only other golfing facility in DeLand at that time was the former College Arms Golf Course located in what is now the southeast section of DeLand. It was owned and operated by the College Arms Hotel, a nationally known winter resort. During World War II, the Hotel and Golf Course were leased to the U.S. Navy and used as an adjunct to the Naval Aviation Training Field located on the outskirts of DeLand. After the property was released by the Navy, the Hotel was not reopened to the public. The Golf Course was acquired by H.T. (Pug) Allen and James McFate. They operated the course until 1955 when the property was sold for real estate development purposes.

From 1955 until 1957, there was no golf course in DeLand and the sons of the hard-core golfers had to go to Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach, Sanford, or Orlando in order to play.

Deland Country Club officially opened for play on July 4, 1957.

This course has tree-lined fairways that are well defined by a standard cut of rough. The greens are small and firm, so getting your shot to land softly is a real challenge.

#16, a 160-yard, par 3, is the signature hole. It requires a tee shot over water to a green with large pine trees lining the back.

The DeLand Country Club fgolf course is a par-70 challenge. The course plays to a maximum distance of 6,032 yards for a par course rating is 69.7 and a slope rating of 121.

Back tees: par-70, 6,032, course rating 69.7, slope rating 121.

Middle tees: par-70, 5,710, course rating 68, slope rating 118.

Forward tees: par-71, 5,185, course rating 70.5, slope rating 122.

DeLand Country Club's golf course, the oldest in west Volusia, closed in September, 2012 after losing money for years

Many holes just do not make sense and layout is squeezed in. If this truly was Donald Ross designed, it was one of his poorer efforts. Conditions keep declining as money for reinvesting is clearly a problem.

Much more challenging than the yardage(6000) leads you to believe. Old style course with lots of elevation changes and small greens that putt great. Great value for the price, will definitely play again. Plays in less than 4 hours even when busy!

Would travel: 20-30 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area, Fair priced based on quality and competitive area pricing

Not a typical Florida golf course. This Donald Ross style course has elevation changes, small greens and requires shot making ability.
